As the American continues to give it his all inside the squared circle, sooner or later those relentless years of action will catch up with him. That's the reason why he's appearing on television screens much less frequently, no longer needed to shoulder the weight of the company by himself.
A demanding schedule on the road takes its toll on superstars, and at the age of 39, John Cena has already come across his fair share of injuries, meaning that the timeframe is unknown for how long we have left of him performing.
So it would be wise, then, to make the most out of his appearances - especially on the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania. The Massachusetts-born wrestler remains a valuable commodity in being able to make a star in an instant, in wrestling terms able to "put over" stars on the grandest stage - or at least put on a match captivating enough to thrust careers into the spotlight. If he's not passing torches then he still has the skills and drawing power to put on big-time matches, as we saw against AJ Styles most recently.
Roman Reigns would eliminate The Undertaker in a star-studded Royal Rumble match to potentially plant the seeds for their bout, while John Cena dropped the championship at the Elimination Chamber and is now venturing to something that sugercoating can't save. A mixed tag-team match.
That's right, John Cena, one of the best performers in history, participating in a mixed tag team match in the grandest stage of them all. It's puzzling on so many levels, as his opponent Miz would say, really?
Billed as a clashing of the "power couples", the married duo of Miz and Maryse will take on John Cena and longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella. It just seems to be an absolute waste. It's more about branching out the brands of the women involved it seems, with the E! Network reality TV shows Total Divas and Total Bellas.
While it only makes sense to get those put out there as much as possible from a business perspective, surely there are other means to go about it rather than sacrificing a spot with one of the biggest stars on the show. For John Cena, taking a back seat in the main picture is one thing but becoming what could go down as a footnote on the show just seems so out of place.

With a few weeks still left till it all goes down in Orlando, we can clutch on to the small hope from Cena's references to The Undertaker, but that's really it. As it stands, John Cena will be at WrestleMania performing again, but in a match that will be forgotten in quick time.
