To be honest, Vargas is an appropriate opponent for Garcia under the circumstances. For Garcia has only had one fight at the full welterweight limit against Robert Guerrero, who is not himself a legitimate welterweight but fights in the weight class to secure big fights on networks. Secondly, Garcia should not be fighting top welterweights after a nearly year long layoff. Finally, Premier Boxing Champions is competing with mainstream American sports for network time slots and has just secured a schedule for 2017; it would have been bad business to quickly string together a big match up on a lesser watched network with little promotion.
Garcia-Vargas is regarded as a tuneup for Garcia prior to his already-scheduled meeting with Keith Thurman on March 4. Once again, boxing is competing with other mainstream sports for programming, so the announcement of Garcia-Thurman is more punctual than what we are used to seeing.
Garcia-Vargas airs Saturday, November 12 on Spike at 9pm US Eastern.
