Australia Turn the Tables in Annihilation of England at Lord's

The Australian team acknowledge the crowd after winning the match

If one talks of turning tables, and that too in an emphatic way, it was the Australian side who set forth an exemplary performance to make a comprehensive comeback into the series and  demolish the Three Lions in their own backyard.

After being cornered in the first test, they looked extremely superior and took control of the gears of the game, right from the first day, and did not give their counterparts a minute chance of rising, until the finally triumphed, edging their rivals by a mammoth margin of 405 runs.

Day 1

It was Michael Clarke, in whose favour the toss turned and he opted to bat first on a pitch which appeared flat. The hope of the English, that the slow seamer at Lord's would yield profits, was completely failed as David Warner was the sole batsman to fall when proceedings on the opening day finished.

Chris Rogers and Smith put on a record stand for the 2nd wicket

The new ball not doing much, and the bowlers failing to target the right areas was capitalised upon by the Australian openers, Chris Rogers and David Warner to take their team off to a flying start with aggressive shots all round the park.

While all ploys by Cook seemed to be ineffective, it was smooth sailing for the Kangaroos until the last ball of the 15th over, 10 runs already coming off it. It was then that David Warner had to pay the price of of not resisting his lust for runs, and lofting Moeen Ali, holing the mistimed shot to deep mid-off.

This brought, World No.2 Test Batsman Steven Smith to the crease, who along with veteran Chris Rogers played the ball on merit very cautiously in the entire post-lunch session. Despite being dropped, both grabbed the opportunity on a pitch which was a batting paradise to register their centuries. It was a matter for great celebration for Chris Rogers as his perseverance and patience finally paid off, and he got his name inked on the honours board of Lord's. On the other hand Steven Smith, for whom shots were not coming fluently initially, it was a matter of time before he settled himself down firmly and rose as shining star for the Oz yet again.

Thus the first day was a big disappointment on the part of the hosts, who had nothing to be happy of. Australia instead, made merry and ended up making 300 plus odd runs at the loss of only one wicket.

Day 2

The first session of the second day, saw stringing in of a colossal partnership of 284 runs between Rogers and Smith, highest stand for any wicket at Lord's, until Rogers was finally dismissed for an amazingly made 173, credits to some tight and disciplined bowling by Stuart Broad, who bowled Chris out. Michael Clarke who joined Smith on the other end looked to be in a complete soup, and ended up returning to the pavilion for just 7 runs, being cleared by Mark Wood.

Only a couple of wickets fell in that session, as Voges and Smith took Australia through. Smith seemed to be in a league of his own playing a plethora of shots and oozing with confidence.

The second session saw history being created, as Steven Smith became the only second Australian to register a double hundred to his name overseas, and that too at Lord's, the Home of Cricket. He yet again left an impression of his excellence in the game, and raised his stature in international cricket up, by a notch.

It was Joe Root who eventually was able to ensnare Smith by trapping him leg before wicket, after he had done the carnage amassing 215 runs. While Australia collected runs in a swift pace in this session Broad earned Marsh's scalp and Joe Root went on take yet another wicket in the form of Nevill, who had supported Smith well on the other end, and had to return for 45.

After tea, the Aussies batted for just an over as Johnson was the last man to fall, and Australia ended up posting as prodigious total of 566, with a hope of making early inroads into the English line up, which did happened.

The very second ball of the England innings saw opener Lyth fall to Starc for a duck. The 8th, 9th and the 10th over made things detrimental for England as a wicket fell in each over in the form of Ballance, Bell and most importantly Joe Root which came as a heavy blow. The Australian bowlers came out on top, with a  Mitchell Johnson different from the one in Cardiff , coming charging in with firey pace along with Josh Hazlewood extracting movement off the pitch to reap rewards.

Ben Stokes came on to support Cook on the other end and did a fine job playing dauntlessly and took England through without anymore wobbles. The day ended with England being 85-4 with Australia in a resolute position and Cook and Stokes having a great task to do the following day.

Day 3

The first hour of the third day saw, the pair of Cook and Stokes sail through quite easily, with the pitch not offering much to the bowlers. Both the batsman recorded their half- centuries and remained untroubled, playing their shots with ease and comfort. It required some arduous work from the bowlers till Stokes was finally removed for an exceptionally well made 87 by Marsh. Stokes was the only man to fall in the first session, while Cook still looked resistant.
Ben Stokes went on to bring up his third fifty in a row at Lord's this summer.

Buttler failed to give England the required pump, departing for just 13 after nicking a ball off Lyon into Nevill's gloves. While the pitch was playing its own tricks the English skipper seemed to bat out the deliveries with veritable patience and determination till he reached 96 and made a blunder by allowing himself to be tempted by a wide delivery off Marsh and being bowled to his, as well as his team's utter dejection. When the second session ended with Australia getting their most essential breakthrough, Moeen Ali was still at the crease batting at 38.

While England were desperately looking to get at least 82 runs to avoid the follow on, the Aussies were aiming to enfold the English innings as soon as possible, in the final session for the day. It was Australia's plan that materialised as they entailed only 43 deliveries to clear the England tail, and wrapped their innings up at 312. Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood shared six wickets between them and looked supreme.

The Aussies did not enforce the follow on, and came out to bat again being backed by a lead of 254 runs. They added insult to the already injured England side in terms of morale, with the duo of Rogers and Warner, looking exceedingly comfortable and heaping up 103 runs more to their lead and ending the day without any loss of wicket.

Day 4

The morning of the fourth day made the Australian intentions pretty clear, as they came in to collect runs as fast as possible. Very early, in the second over of the day Chris Rogers retired seemingly feeling dizzy and this brought Steven Smith to the crease. Both the batsmen played effortlessly with Smith specially being the aggressor, as they looked to accelerate the innings.

Soon Warner fell in the trap of Moeen Ali, missing out on a century at the Lord's to his sheer disappointment and had to take the long walk back for 83. Trying to go big and adhering to his team's plan, Smith too fell to Moeen Ali after making a significant 58 off just 48 deliveries. Mitchell Marsh came in and did the required destruction making 2 off 19 as Australia finally declared, just at the brink of lunch with a lead of  508 and Clarke not out on 32.
Johnson struck in his first over getting the big wicket of Cook

While saving the match was the best resort England had, they succumbed and fell like a pack of cards before the Australians who were brutal enough to deflate the sails of their rivals completely. They saw off the first three tricky overs before lunch but once play resumed the Australian bowlers tore apart the English batting order to pick up five wickets in the second session with England staring at a nightmarish defeat, and Australia a glorious win. Adam Lyth was yet again the first one to depart and was followed up by Cook who could have proved to be the biggest hindrance for Australia. Neither Balance nor Bell lasted long enough as English ended up at 64-5 with the final session yet to be played.

While catastrophe continued for England, Australia had enough reasons to rejoice as Buttler departed on the very first ball after tea, to Johnson and three balls later it was Moeen Ali to follow his teammate for a duck, to a marvelous bouncer from Johnson who made one think whether the pitch was really flat! It was just a matter of time before the remaining three wickets fell and the entire Three Lions' team was sent back to the pavilion with a savage treatment by the Aussie bowlers.

The massive 405 run victory was the best gift the Aussies could give their fans who traveled in 13pt numbers to support their team, as well as the ones back home. It was a complete turn around with Chirs Rogers, Hazlewood and specially Steven Smith with his lethal bat and Mitchell Johnson with the fiery ball in his hand being the catalysts for their team.

It was their first win on the English land, after the one at Leeds in 2009, and first at the historical Lord's since 2005.

The series is now levelled 1-1 and some exciting cricket awaits ahead for the cricket fanatics. While Australia looked magnum opus in this test, England would like to forget it as a nightmare and come afresh in the third test at Birmingham, beginning on July 29th.
